Outdoor Hour Challenge: Backyard Birds

Yea!  We are back to weekly nature studies!  The boys and I both really enjoy this part of our homeschooling.  I decided to start our studies with backyard birds, to tie in to our animal classification studies in science.  For the first week we covered red birds.

IMG_2169 Here is ds3’s nature journal with pics he colored of a robin and a cardinal.

IMG_2156 On our nature walk we were lucky enough to spot a cardinal!  When we go on these walks the boys typically talk my ears off and jump from subject to subject.  Today I made them all walk in silence to listen for bird calls.  Then we stopped and stood under this tree and just looked and waited and the cardinal showed up.  :)

IMG_2157 It was quite hot so we took a short walk.  Ds2 was able to join us as his high school doesn’t start until the 24th.  I tell ‘ya, I’m going to miss that boy.  Next week?  Blue birds!  Join in on the Outdoor Challenge Hour fun at Barbara’s Handbook Of Nature Study.

  2. A cardinal! We do not have cardinals here in CA so I would love to see one. We have robins as our "red bird" here though and lots of them. :)

I am so happy to see that you are going to work through the bird challenges. I will look forward to seeing how it goes in your family.

    Thanks for the link,

  3. You spend so much thought on your classes! I had teachers like you in primary school in Holland but not after that. I'm so jealous of your kids.
