The Home Stretch

IMG_6366

Today this young man saw his shadow.  Which of course means 6 more weeks of school!  Wow, only 6 more weeks left in our homeschooling year.  We are taking next week off for spring break to coincide with ds2’s break from public school and then we will be wrapping up ds3’s 3rd grade and ds4’s Kindergarten adventures.

We do loosely follow a traditional school year calendar.   It helps of course since ds2 is in public school, but also because it just works for us.  The summer break gives me time to plan and purchase material for the new year and time to prepare the boys’ portfolios for yearly evals.  Plus summer just rocks!  We spend as much of it as we can at the beach, parks, cousin’s houses and our own backyard grilling and running through the sprinkler.  And eating as much fresh corn on the cob as I can get my hands on.  Mmm.  6 more weeks!

Here is an overview of what we will be covering:

Ds4 (MFW Kindergarten)
Butterfly
Frog
Fox
Vegetables
Quail
Yellow

Ds3 (3rd Grade)
Math:  time, roman numerals, rounding, multiplication, division, geometric figures
Language:  punctuation, verbs, nouns, pronouns, synonyms, antonyms
Geography:  Germany, Holland, Spain, Antarctica, the Arctic
Science:  rocks and minerals, machines, energy, light, magnets, electricity
Nature Studies:  Handbook of Nature Study  spring series
Reading:  Right now ds is super into the Magic Tree House series of books and we are reading whichever one corresponds with any topic we are studying (as well as any that strike ds’s fancy lol.)

In keeping with our monthly field trip goal,  I am planning a visit to the butterfly house when it opens in April and the art museum in May when the China children’s exhibit begins.

I think it’s going to be a bodacious 6 weeks and a great ending to our homeschooling year.  :)
